Here are some tips that really helped with my move from Florida to New York:
Used websites such as Street Easy, Zillow and Apartments.com to find an apartment that I would love and be comfortable in throughout my two years of graduate school.
Researched subway maps to see which neighborhoods were closest to Columbia University so that my commute to class would be under 30 minutes daily.
Finding the right insurance for your personal belongings in case of a fire or any natural disasters.
Researched the Department of New York City to look for crime rates, demographics and statistics of the neighborhoods I wanted to live in.
How can I forget? Bought my ticket to fly into the city months in advance because plane tickets to New York during summertime tend to be a bit expensive.
And how could I forget, the key factor of all: The Checklist. This helped to organize where I would shop for furniture and home decor. My list included places like: Ikea Ross Target Marshall's Amazon
