The Next Big Thing in Discovering His Passion For Civil Engineering

In life, sometimes we see ourselves down a path or we hope to complete college in 4 years and move on to graduate school. Things don’t always work out the way we want them to, but we must always strive for the best. Being a college student can be hard at times, distractors such as peer pressure and college parties, and despite this, some of us still manage to make it out with a stellar record. There is one remarkable young fellow who smiled time after time in the face of adversity, Tyrell Brooks.

When Tyrell began studying at Florida International University in Miami, he thought that his journey would have only lasted 4 years and that he would somehow have a Bachelor of Science in Physics. He had high hopes of moving on to graduate school where he would pursue a PhD in Physics, but like many young adults in our era, Tyrell suddenly had a change of heart. Physics had always been an important facet in his educational journey, but he later knew that he wanted more than a likening to matter and energy. He wanted to couple this with his love for buildings and the detail that went into every piece of its architecture.

Tyrell soon decided that Engineering was what he wanted to study, and in doing so he made the decision to take a break from his studies to see if he could take the first steps towards this career path. He had hopes of potentially acquiring a job at a construction site. Tyrell could channel his inner passion while coupling both the mechanics of Physics and his love for building technology. What better way to start, hand on experience is sometimes key in situations such as these. I later found out that Tyrell had his eye on a specialization, Civil Engineering. In short, this particular specialization encompasses all aspects of building construction. An individual must love work that includes some level of manual labor or constructing spectacular structures. Civil Engineering is known to be one of the most renowned fields amongst its class because a lot of its emphasis is placed within our environment. If you are rather curious as to more details about this type of engineering, please see the link below: https://civil.columbia.edu/about/what-civil-engineering.

Tyrell’s inspiration for Civil Engineering is far beyond what he could imagine. Being a student in Miami has helped to expose him to that factor because Miami is known for great big buildings that are very catchy to the naked eye. Tyrell’s dream is to work for LEAD Engineering Contractors, LLC one day and he believes it’s not just the education that he will receive in undergraduate which may afford this opportunity. But also, his vigor to always work hard and push himself at whatever he does. He said, “it is not an easy major, it is hard, and it is even getting more challenging in the final years. However, he mentions that one key factor in his field is being able to experience the fieldwork associated with civil engineering.” It’s important to experience what your career will be like once you graduate, having that firsthand experience can help you to decide if this is really what you hope to do long term.

Being a young professional in the field of civil engineering can be challenging but very rewarding. The typical salary of a Civil Engineer in the United States is $86,640 per year or $41.65 per hour. https://www.bls.gov/ooh/architecture-and-engineering/civil-engineers.htm

Some of the top civil engineering schools in the United States are:

  • University of California- Berkeley
  • University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign
  • Georgia Institute of Technology
  • Stanford University
  • University of Austin-Texas (Cockrell)
