Major- Internet of Things
Florida International University
Young millennials could not bear the thought of not being able to be on their phones, computers, xbox, and playstation daily. It would be a horrifying experience if most of us had to go through our daily lives without technology and not be able to connect. Communication has narrowed to text messages and mostly video calls in our generation. We rarely ever pick up the phone to have an honest conversation anymore. Furthermore, when we aren’t spending half of our days on our phones browsing social media, we are engaged in some epic game of animal crossing, the sims, FIFA, and need for speed. Technology owns us!
Christopher aspired to study all things on the internet. He is a 22-year-old student with Jamaican and Trinidadian roots. Chris has always been passionate about technology.
Hence, the reason why he decided to choose the course of study- Internet of Things. I was pleasantly surprised when he told me what his area of study was. I had yet to learn that this was a degree program. Pretty cool, right? Christopher loves the idea of being connected with friends and family daily. He thought his biggest fear of doing this major would be the challenging mathematical and engineering courses. However, he was surprised when he discovered that it was not as difficult as the other engineering fields, which gave him a sense of relief. Christopher believes that this field is his purpose. His passion for technology is undeniable, and he admires that technology keeps him connected, which is the driving force shaping today’s society and many human interactions. He genuinely loves the vastness and diversity of technology.
Advice: Stay up to date on most things tech because they are constantly updating. It is the one thing that evolves at the fastest pace.
Culture: “Being a person of color has not affected me in the slightest bit of my field. I feel like if you do the work, nothing is stopping you from opportunity. Unlike other fields in computer science, it is you and a machine and less human-to-human interaction. So, things like discrimination and racism cannot be an excuse for failure.”
A memorable experience from college is that he realized the amount of freedom he had in his personal life. I did not have to tell anyone where I was going or what I was doing.
Challenges: My primary challenge was the shift from studying Computer Engineering. Mathematics is not my strong suit, and after failing calculus, I realized I would not make it to Calculus III and Statistics.
